Overview

Through the Department for Education’s Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) framework, St John Fisher Catholic High School in Wigan has become the first school to benefit from a state-of-the-art new build featuring high-tech learning spaces.

The project includes a new three-storey teaching block designed for 1,050 pupils, alongside a dedicated sports block and activity centre. These facilities will provide modern classrooms, science laboratories, a learning resource centre, and specialist spaces for art, music, drama, and Information and Communication Technology.

Social value statistics

35 apprentices employed at various stages of the project, learning hands-on skills
Over £101,000 spent with social enterprise schemes, supporting wider community and social initiatives
Donations made to local food banks at Christmas, and Easter egg runs were organised for the community

A distinctive feature of the new building is its chapel, which incorporates historic stained-glass panels restored from a decommissioned Liverpool church, blending tradition with innovation.

Delivered using MMC principles, the development embeds sustainability at its core, achieving Net Zero Carbon in Operation.

This investment will support the school’s ambition to raise aspirations across its student body and wider community, build on its strong sporting heritage, and reinforce its position as the leading choice for Catholic education in Wigan.

The new school is now in use, and further work is being undertaken to demolish the remaining buildings and landscape the rest of the site to complete the transformation.
