Claire Aspen Grove Resident Story

Award-winning housing development and regeneration partnership

Cardiff Living is an exciting development partnership between Wates Residential and the City of Cardiff Council. The programme will deliver 1,500 new homes across 40 sites in Cardiff over a 10-year period.

At least 40% (around 600) of the 1,500 total homes will be council homes, available for rent through the Council’s existing allocations process, with a small number being made available to first time buyers through the Council’s low cost home ownership scheme.

The remaining 60% (around 900) homes will be available for purchase on the open market under the Cardiff Living brand. All properties will meet high levels of sustainability and energy efficiency, ensuring that we help tackle fuel poverty.

Community investment

One of the key objectives of the project is to maximise investment in Cardiff’s communities. The project will deliver substantial benefits including the creation of long-term local training and employment programmes as well as opportunities for local businesses and community groups. Community investment highlights include:

  • Supporting the employment of over 6,400 people
  • Creating over 9,000 weeks of training for Cardiff residents
  • Economic growth through locally procured supply chain
  • Work placements and employment of local apprentices and trainees
  • To date the partners have supported the training of 71 apprentices, 147 people on work experience placements and worked with 4317 students in workshops, site visits and careers events.
  • Wates Giving donated £20,000 to School of Hard Knocks, a charity who support unemployed adults in developing employability and life skills through rugby training, as well as providing CV writing workshops and interview technique training.

1,700 new homes

The Cardiff Council’s Cardiff Living affordable housing scheme is a £100m project, which will see the construction of over 1,700 new homes.

Principal Design Manager, Stuart Jones, tells us more about the Cardiff Living Passivhaus scheme that will see 42 affordable homes built to the Passivhaus low energy building standard, which is designed to create energy efficient homes.

The new homes in our developments are high-quality builds which are helping to regenerate existing estates and create well connected, sustainable communities across Cardiff.
