Sam Hagans is a Commercial Director for Smartspace.
Sam joined Wates in 2003 as an Assistant Surveyor and has since built a 20+ year career that’s seen him rise through commercial roles to become Commercial Director in Smartspace.
Before Wates, he began his career with Bovis, completing his apprenticeship before transitioning to Wates, where he’s been ever since.
As Commercial Director, Sam leads a team of over 80 commercial professionals, balancing strategic leadership with hands-on project delivery. His expertise spans commercial and contract management, risk, preconstruction, work winning and supply chain relationships.
Sam is proud to have helped grow the Smartspace business, playing a key role in complex projects such as GPA Croydon. He’s passionate about developing talent and ensuring the business has a strong succession pipeline. To Sam, great leadership is about building loyal, empowered teams and fostering strong relationships at every level. He champions collaboration and innovation, most notably through initiatives like the “Save £100” challenge, which encourages small, impactful ideas from across the business.
Looking ahead, Sam is focused on sustainable growth, repeat business, and nurturing the next generation of Smartspace talent.
