Introduce yourself for us

I’m Sarah, I’m 34 and a Proposals Manager for Wates, working with the bid teams across the Home Counties.

How long have you been in your current role?

I’ve worked for Wates for just over 3 years but have worked in proposals for over 10 years.

What brought you to Wates?

The company values, particularly ‘respect for people and communities’ and ‘teamwork’, highlight their people focused attitude and together with the family ownership, really make Wates stand out from others in the industry as an employer who values and supports their employees and promote a healthy work / life balance.

What advice would you give to women entering the industry?

Construction is a vibrant and dynamic industry; no 2 days are ever the same. There is such a variety of roles in the industry – there really is something for everyone. Also, to never tell yourself you can’t do something – you are more capable than you think and no one knows everything, especially not on their first day!

Who are your role models?

My Grandma is the person I look up to, she is a strong and independent woman who’s never let anything stand in the way of what she has wanted to accomplish. She has also travelled and loves a good adventure!

Tell us something unusual about you

I have recently taken to signing myself up for crazy challenges. This year I’ve climbed the highest mountain in South Wales 10 times (in 18.5 hours!) and the plans for next year are even more extreme!

What changes would you like to see in 100 years time?

The growth and support of women working in the Construction Industry is a great step towards breaking the stereotypes of the industry and it would be great to see a change across society where people don’t feel pressure to conform to perceived stereotypes or have judgements made based on stereotyping.
