Built on a brownfield site, Joseph Norton Academy will offer 3,563 sq. ft. of high quality, modern learning space that is able to support the needs of 132 children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties.

Project overview

Plans for the school have been developed with input from students and in addition to the teaching spaces, there will be: 

  • ​Areas for recovery to support emotional regulation and wellbeing. 
  • ​Immersive sensory spaces. 
  • ​A dedicated garden for each ground floor classroom. 
  • ​A ‘farm zone’, where students can interaction with animals in purpose-built enclosures. 
  • ​Outdoor play areas with a wide range of equipment. 
  • ​A multi-use games area (MUGA) to encourage physical activity and team sports.

Designed for low carbon performance

The project is aiming to achieve an EPC A+ rating and designed to be low-carbon, incorporating a range of sustainable design features such as photovoltaic panels, high-performance LED lighting, advanced building fabric with low air permeability, high-efficiency heat recovery, CO₂-controlled ventilation, and the use of air source heat pumps. 

​The school is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 and will create an inclusive, nurturing and engaging environment that supports learning and wellbeing.
