Work started in October 2022 on the first of 249 modern properties that will help transform the Gorse Ride estate, replacing the original 1970s pre-fabs.

The new homes have been designed to be energy efficient with high levels of insulation and low carbon innovations such as air source heat pumps to help reduce emissions and make them more affordable to heat, tackling the fuel poverty crisis whilst helping to reduce the borough’s carbon footprint.

As a contractor for Wokingham Borough Council’s flagship regeneration scheme, we’re delivering high-quality, energy-efficient places to live that respond to local need. 74% will be affordable, and four have been designed for residents with specific accessibility requirements, including wheelchair-friendly layouts and level-access showers.

Each property is being built with sustainability in mind, using high levels of insulation and low-carbon technology like air source heat pumps to help reduce emissions and lower energy bills.

We’re also focused on making a wider impact. Our social value programme has included school and college engagement, charity support, student site visits, job centre placements and community activities like wellbeing walks and a summer BBQ to bring everyone together.

Alongside the events and day-to-day interactions, the team has delivered training and employment support to help residents build long-term skills and open up new opportunities.

In our latest video, Barry Williams, Commercial Director for Wates Residential in the South, is joined by Steve Bowers, Gorse Ride Community Steering Group Lead, to reflect on the impact so far. From relationship-building to practical support, it is a snapshot of how we are helping to create a thriving, connected community while the project is still underway.

Our housing regeneration scheme will see affordable homes built for the future with sustainability in mind. This includes high levels of insulation and low carbon innovations to help residents heat their homes efficiently, helping to tackle the fuel poverty crisis whilst also reducing the borough’s carbon footprint.

We are proud to be working with Wates on this ambitious project and are committed to providing the right homes at the right places for generations to come.”
