Neil Lock was awarded Construction Manager of the Year for his work on the challenging V&A Museum extension project; Gold Medal winners were John Laycock and Dominic Hattee with a silver medal for Dave Nott.
The Sunday Times HSBC Top Track 100 league table ranks Britain’s 100 private companies with the biggest sales. It is compiled by Fast Track and published in The Sunday Times each July. In 2018, Wates was ranked #35, five places higher than our ranking in 2017.
The IIP commented that reaccreditation was a remarkable given the continually increasing requirements needed to reach this status, and the amount of growth and transformation that had taken place within Wates since the last assessment.
The accolade recognised Wates’ commitment to advancing social mobility in the communities in which it works, and through its award-winning sustainability programme, Reshaping Tomorrow.
In basic numbers, Wates achieved turnover of £1.53bn in 2016 and secured £35.5m of profit – both up on 2015. It employed 92 apprentices, completed 72 charitable projects, took 1,029 young people through its Building Futures Programme, and saw a 73 per cent reduction in dangerous occurrences on site.
This is the second consecutive time that Wates Group has won a Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development, a remarkable achievement for our people and for our business. There is no higher accolade for businesses in the UK than to receive a Queen’s Award.
These top industry awards were made in recognition of Wates’ outstanding project delivery, innovation, and forward-looking approach to the industry. They also acknowledged the impact of our sustainability programme.

Hosted at an awards ceremony as part of the London build Expo, the London Construction Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals and companies that have a played a defining role in delivering exceptional quality, innovation and service within the industry, helping to drive London construction forward.
Offsite Awards 2018
For the third consecutive year SES was the overall winners in the Best Use of MEP Prefabrication category, this year for the Quadram Institute, a state-of-the-art £75m food and health research laboratory project in Norwich.
Construction News Specialist Awards 2018
SES was victorious at the Construction News Specialist Awards 2018 in the Project of the Year (subcontract over £6m) category for the Queensferry Crossing, the biggest infrastructure project in Scottish history.
BESA Yorkshire Region Training Awards 2018
Congratulations to Grant Hudson and Drew Tyrrell, Assistant Project Engineer who were celebrating a triumphant weekend as both were presented with Awards at the prestigious BESA Yorkshire Region Awards 2018. The BESA Awards recognise apprentices and employers within the building services industry who have had outstanding achievements over the past year. Drew won the much coveted Chairman’s Award. Grant won the Electrical Apprentice of the Year Award.
British Safety Council International Safety Awards 2018
SES has once again been awarded the British Safety Council’s International Safety Award for the 22nd consecutive year – a fantastic achievement! The award is in recognition of our commitment to keeping our workers and workplaces health and safe during the calendar year.
SES was (for the second year) the overall winners in the Best Use of MEP Prefabrication category at the 2017 Offsite Awards. This year for the London Gasholders project, a unique project which houses 145 luxury apartments, which is a series of three linked new build cylindrical structures, each housed within the constraints of the cast-iron Victorian listed gasholder rings that were used to form part of the largest gas works in London.
SES was presented with the Best Health & Safety Initiative Award at the ECA Annual Awards 2017 for our outstanding health and safety record, Going Live initiative and hugely impactful campaign around We’re Safer Together – Zero Harm.
Hosted by the Leeds Sustainability Institute, The RISE Awards reward the most pioneering initiatives in research, innovation, sustainability and enterprise (RISE). SES was highly commended in the Health, Safety and Wellbeing category and, as the overall winner, was presented with the main accolade of the evening, the prestigious Chair’s Award.
Emily Marner and Nick Darling from SES were announced winners on Friday evening at the 2nd CIBSE Yorkshire Awards 2017. Emily was presented with the Young Engineer of the Year Award and Nick was presented with the Student Award after being nominated by Brunel University.
BESA Yorkshire Region Training Awards 2017
Congratulations to Grant Hudson, Stage 2 Electrical Apprentice, Yorkshire who was presented with the Citizenship Award at the BESA Yorkshire Region Training Awards 2017 for his commitment to communities and charity, in particular a three week charity expedition to Uganda to undertake the renovation of a primary school.
SES was the overall winners in the Best Use of MEP Prefabrication category for 5 & 6 Wellington Place, demonstrating we are a leader in the industry and by utilising the benefits of offsite manufacturing we provided a modern, collaborative and innovative solution to the client.
SES celebrated winning the Sustainable Developments – Non Domestic category at the RISE Awards 2016 for the Laidlaw Library project. The Laidlaw Library is a £27.5m BREEAM ‘Excellent’ building reflecting outstanding sustainability and environmental credentials creating an inspirational, innovative and sustainable learning space for students at the University of Leeds.
SES was crowned winner of the ‘Partners in Expert Services – Single Site’ category at the Premises and Facilities Management (PFM) Industry Awards 2016. SES’ partnership submission was a collaborative effort with Premier Technical Services Group (PTSG), our lightning protection sub-contractor for the Queensferry Crossing. The PFM Awards recognise the excellent achievements that have been accomplished in the FM industry throughout the year.
SES was announced the winners in the Collaborative Working Partnership category at the very first CIBSE Yorkshire Awards 2016. SES was presented with the award for their collaborative approach taken on the Sheffield Custody Suite – a UK flagship police force project.
