A newly refurbished kitchen has been officially opened at Grangetown Boys and Girls Club, creating a brighter and more accessible space for the club’s cooking sessions, healthy eating activities and wider community programmes.

The club, located in one of the least advantaged areas of Cardiff, provides open access activities for young people as well as intergenerational sessions that bring residents together through sport, cooking, creative projects and social action.

Cllr Lynda Thorne, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities and ward councillor for Grangetown, attended the opening and met with volunteers and club members. She was joined by representatives from Wates Residential, Stuart Jones and Darren Powell, for the ribbon cutting. Guests were then invited to sample food prepared in the new kitchen.

The refurbishment was made possible thanks to a kitchen donation from Moores, installed with support from Wates Residential and supply chain partners ISTL, Advanced Carpentry Solutions and Denvalco. All partners contributed their time and resources at no cost to the club, helping to create a fresh, functional and welcoming facility for the community.

Our old kitchen was no longer fit for purpose, so having a new space like this will make a real difference to the people who use our club every day. These classes offer long term benefits, helping people build confidence, learn new skills and spend time together in a positive and supportive environment, and we’re so grateful for the opportunity this gives our community.”

Steve Khaireh MBE

Director and Youth Worker from Grangetown Boys and Girls Club

Grangetown Boys and Girls Club plays such an important role in supporting young people and bringing the whole community together. Having a modern, fully equipped kitchen will make a real difference to the activities the club can offer—helping residents learn new skills, enjoy healthy food, and spend time together in a safe and welcoming space. We’re incredibly grateful to Wates Residential, Moores, and all the partners involved for their generosity and commitment to our community. This project reflects the very best of what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared purpose to improve lives in Grangetown.”

The project forms part of the community investment activity delivered alongside Phase 1 of the Channel View regeneration. This first phase is delivering 126 older persons’ apartments, with a further 228 homes approved across later stages, contributing to a wider masterplan with capacity for up to 360 new homes. Through the regeneration, Cardiff Council and our Residential division are working in partnership to deliver new energy efficient homes and meaningful community benefits for residents in Grangetown.
