Clear targets create clarity, alignment and confidence and in an uncertain world, that clarity is becoming one of the most powerful enablers of effective business planning.

Science-based targets not only guide climate action; they remove confusion, focus effort, and help create the stable conditions in which organisations can operate and succeed.

That’s why it is so encouraging, and strategically important, to see the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) confirm that more than 10,000 companies worldwide now have validated science-based targets.

With over 40% of global market capitalisation now covered by these targets, there is a clear critical mass of commercial commitment behind the transition to a low carbon economy.

Here at Wates, this moment is both inspiring and galvanising.

Reaching 10,000 companies with validated science-based targets is a landmark moment, not just for the SBTi, but for every organisation committed to delivering meaningful climate action.

“We see science-based targets as fundamental to transforming our own industry. They guide how we decarbonise our operations, support our supply chain to cut emissions, and design and build in ways that protect and restore the natural world.”

Achieving a net zero, nature positive future depends on collaboration, which is why we’ve been actively encouraging our suppliers to adopt science-based targets.”

We have played an active role in the Supply Chain Sustainability School’s climate action working group, supporting the launch of new e learning to help suppliers set targets through SBTi’s fast track route. As the urgency to address the climate crisis grows, so too does the opportunity for the built environment sector to lead by example. Now is the moment for businesses across our industry to accelerate science-based climate action and help shape a resilient, thriving future.

As one of the 10,000 companies with validated targets, we’re proud to stand with organisations putting science at the centre of climate action, and to show that real, accelerating momentum is building across the global business community.
