Wates Construction Midlands has appointed Richard Woolmore as Operations Director in a strategic move to enhance delivery of its growing project portfolio in the midlands.
Richard will work alongside existing Operations Director, Mark Jones, who was promoted to the role in 2015 having previously been Construction Manager. Together, Richard and Mark will be responsible for Wates Construction’s projects across the East and West Midlands, maintaining the company’s high standards in timely delivery, health, safety and quality. Richard will also be involved in a number of projects procured via Wates’ position on the Scape – Major Works UK framework.
Joining Wates from Bouygues UK where he held the position of Construction Director for the North and Midlands division, Richard boasts over 30 years of industry knowledge and experience exclusively with Tier 1 principle contractors including Galliford Try, Interserve and Kier. Past projects include the new George Green Library at the University of Nottingham, the redevelopment of the Mailbox in Birmingham and the city’s first bespoke new build PRS scheme, The Forum, part of the Smithfields redevelopment.
The appointment marks a significant step in Wates Construction’s growth strategy to identify new business opportunities across the region as well as continuously improving client experience and strengthening delivery of its current project base. This includes the recent appointment by London Continental Railways (LCR) to construct buildings One and Four of the £135m Axis Square development and the ongoing construction of The Bank 2 on Broad Street, following completion of the neighbouring 21-storey building.
“Wates is a renowned and trusted contractor in the Midlands and across the UK, with an increasingly impressive portfolio of projects complementing a reputation for quality delivery and community engagement. I am pleased to be playing a strategic part in this as the business seeks to identify new markets in which it will further grow and diversify. It is a privilege to be working alongside Mark and joining the talented teams in the East and West Midlands while bringing my own skills and experience to bear on Wates’ regional operations.”
John Carlin, Managing Director, Wates Construction Midlands, added:
“Richard’s appointment is a strategic step in our rapid growth across the region as we continue to seek new opportunities while generating a local economic and social impact. His knowledge and wealth of experience make him an excellent addition to our teams in the East and West Midlands. I am looking forward to reaping the benefits of this in the coming months and in the meantime, would like to extend him a very warm welcome to Wates.”
Outside the construction industry, Richard is a renowned collector and appraisor of vintage guitars. He lives in Northampton with his wife and son.
