Project overview

Wates Living Space provides internal and external repairs, kitchen and bathroom renewals and roofing works across Thurrock Council’s housing stock, as part of the authority’s four-year planned maintenance framework.

In addition to the building work, WLS has used its position on the framework to have a significant, positive impact on the local community. This includes spending £6m with local small businesses and investing £10k in local charities and community causes.

Almost 1,500 hours of training and employment experience has been provided for residents, including via the Wates Group’s acclaimed Building Futures programme. This enabled 13 young people from across Thurrock to participate in a two-week course to improve their employability, with practical trade taster sessions and workshops on topics such as CV writing and interview skills. Candidates were also coached and supported through examinations for CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) cards, which it is hoped will inspire them to work in the construction sector after completing the programme.
