70 Tamworth homes refurbished in first part of 10-year partnership
Wates cements its position as Tamworth Borough Council’s partner of choice for planned housing maintenance until 2030.
Work is gathering pace in Tamworth to improve and enhance housing stock across the borough, with residents of 70 homes benefitting from refurbishment work.
The first batch of planned maintenance by Wates has seen 22 bungalows and 48 flats provided with new roofing, gutters and pipes and replacement windows and doors. External fencing and pathways have also been replaced or refurbished to enhance the outdoor areas.
The project, carried out at Sunset Close to the west of the town centre, is the first in a 10-year partnership between Wates and Tamworth Borough Council that will see council housing stock upgraded.
Work completed in September after restarting in June following a temporary pause during the Covid-19 lockdown to implement the necessary safety and social distancing measures. Wates worked hard to accelerate the programme of works to ensure residents were provided with the required improvements before winter.
I’m really pleased with the excellent progress we’re making as Tamworth Council’s planned housing maintenance partner. This has given us a solid foundation for the coming decade, throughout which we will continue to deliver a high quality and efficient service that helps to improve the quality of housing for local people.
Despite the considerable uncertainty created by the coronavirus pandemic and a necessary pause on all sites, we were determined to ensure these homes were completed on time and residents were provided with the necessary property improvements before winter. We worked rigorously to ensure that residents encountered minimal disruption while also strictly adhering to the government’s safety measures.”

It’s great to see the first phase of works being completed for our tenants in this new 10-year partnership with Wates, despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic. Providing a high standard of decent, affordable homes is one of our main priorities as a council and represents a significant proportion of our spending. We’re delighted that our residents are already starting to see the benefits of the new partnership with Wates.”
