Celebrating multiple wins at Constructing Excellence North East Awards
Held on Friday, 12 June at the Grand Hotel, Gosforth Park, the awards celebrated outstanding projects across the North East’s construction and infrastructure sector, bringing together leading organisations committed to driving the industry forward.
Our Wates Construction division was recognised for its work on Teesside University’s landmark Digital Life building, achieving first place for the Integration and Collaborative Working Award, selected from ten shortlisted projects. It also secured the Delivering Value Award, highlighting the outstanding outcomes and tangible benefits the development delivered for its client.
Digital Life is the fourth building we have constructed for Teesside University, demonstrating the strength of our long-term partnership.

Building on this success, the Digital Life building was also awarded Highly Commended in the Building Project of the Year category, reinforcing the overall quality and impact of the scheme. In the same category, our team – comprising of Wates Construction and SES teams – was also recognised with a ‘Special Award’ for its delivery of the AESC UK gigafactory project in Sunderland. This landmark scheme is significant not only for Sunderland, but also for the wider UK economy.
The evening also celebrated individual achievement, with Darren Vipond, Director of Campus Services at Teesside University, receiving the Outstanding Contribution award in recognition of his transformative contribution to the university’s campus.
Neil Matthias, Major Projects Director, Wates Construction, was also honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Award in recognition of more than 30 years of exceptional leadership, influence and achievement across the built environment sector.
