Modern slavery: our ongoing commitment to eradicating exploitation
Earlier this year, Unseen UK published its Modern Slavery & Exploitation Helpline Annual Assessment, revealing a troubling shift: the construction sector now ranks second in reported labour exploitation cases – up from third in 2023.
This data underscores a stark reality. The construction industry faces unique and persistent challenges in managing labour ethically, and as a sector, we must do more to confront this issue head-on.
Modern slavery is a serious crime that sees vulnerable people exploited for financial gain. At Wates, we recognise the risks within our industry and are committed to playing our part in tackling this injustice.
Our Modern Slavery Statement reflects this commitment. It demonstrates how our business is motivated by purpose and dedicated to prevention.
In 2024 and 2025, we’ve made significant strides in strengthening our approach:
- Reinforced governance through our Modern Slavery Working Group
- Expanded training and awareness across operational teams
- Improved supplier engagement and due diligence
- Conducted targeted risk assessments in high-risk areas
- Completed a gap analysis with Unseen to identify areas for improvement
- Delivered our first Ethical Site Audits, supported by Unseen
- Developed our first Modern Slavery Strategy to guide long-term action
However, we recognise the need to continue to do more – especially alongside our supply chain partners, given the critical role the supply chain plays in modern slavery prevention. That’s why we’re committed to working closely with our partners and collaborating across the sector to drive meaningful change and eliminate exploitation.
Together, we believe we can build a safer, fairer industry – one where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
