Project at a glance

Upgrading services in healthcare environments is a privilege and one we never take for granted; we pride ourselves on being a trusted partner to improve facilities for local and surrounding communities, working with our customers  to ensure that everybody receives the care they need.

Basingstoke Pathology Laboratory Refurbishment

After the successful handover of a newly transformed pharmacy department at Winchester Hospital, we were awarded the Pathology Laboratory Refurbishment project at Basingstoke Hospital. We transferred our team from Winchester Hospital to Basingstoke to deliver the same high level of service for Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Procured through the Crown Commercial Services (CCS) Construction and Associated Services Agreement, our team began the first phase of works in February 2022 and concluded works to five subsequent phases in April 2023.

The project was designed and carried out to make way for revolutionised lab equipment to better serve the hospital’s haematology, biochemistry, cellular pathology and microbiology services and to build in more capacity to cater for increased demand on the NHS. Not only this, the project has created further office, meeting and storage space for key consultants alongside new ramp access for deliveries and overall improved aesthetic.

Adapting for Success

Disruption must be kept to a minimum in all fit-out projects, but in this case, it had to be completely mitigated throughout. All six phases were intricately designed to minimise impact on staff operations. Due to the proximity of seven theatres located above the project area, we altered the original planned programme of works to avoid disturbance to surgeons, switching onto a night shift pattern to ensure both fit-out works and planned surgeries could continue to schedule.

Completion of the first phase also included the installation of new mechanical and electrical (M&E) services, delivered alongside a temporary power supply to keep adjacent labs and critical systems fully operational.

Enhancing Social Value

Reducing the carbon footprint and minimising running costs through the use of MEPH equipment and plant renewals allowed increased funding to be routed to key services. We see this as an essential part of our role in projects; to minimise costs and provide the greatest benefit to all stakeholders.

We are committed to ensuring our projects have a positive impact on local communities and create opportunities to train the future workforce. As such, a local labourer, eager to gain experience in the construction industry, was hired for the duration of this project to help progress his career.

Health and Safety Performance

Throughout the project we maintained a high quality project welfare, supported by Biosite, for all of our staff and operatives to use. Delivering projects in healthcare environments requires careful attention to coordinate all activities while minimising risk to healthcare staff, our staff, supply chain partners and visitors.

All tools and materials had to be transited through the visitor entrances and exits, requiring a customer-facing approach with consideration of the potential risks to vulnerable members of the public. Our tried and tested supply chain has an understanding of the rigorous standards we work to and adhere to the same level of performance throughout.
