Modernising Winsford Fire Station for a sustainable future
As part of Cheshire Fire Authority’s ongoing estate modernisation programme, our Smartspace business has successfully delivered the full refurbishment and decarbonisation of Winsford Fire Station. The project, completed in June 2025 over a 28-week period, is part of a wider initiative to upgrade fire service facilities across the region, ensuring they are sustainable, future-ready, and aligned with the evolving needs of emergency service professionals.
Our Smartspace business was appointed to carry out a full internal and external refurbishment of the station, with a focus on improving operational efficiency, creating a modern working environment, and significantly enhancing the building’s environmental performance.
Works included the complete strip-out and reconfiguration of internal areas, a full mechanical and electrical upgrade, the removal of all gas services, and the transition to an all-electric system.
A new roof and improved insulation were installed to boost energy efficiency, while solar panels with battery storage were fitted to help power the station and support EV charging infrastructure.

Wellbeing at the forefront
Staff welfare was a key consideration throughout the refurbishment. The station now benefits from new accessible facilities, a fully equipped gym, upgraded kitchen and break areas, a quiet room, and a dedicated garden space. The internal environment has been transformed to support both the health and wellbeing of fire crews and the smooth delivery of daily operations.
The project also delivered strong sustainability outcomes. In addition to decarbonising the building and removing reliance on fossil fuels, our Smartspace team installed energy-efficient LED lighting, low-flow sanitaryware, and solar technology to significantly reduce the station’s carbon footprint.

Social value in mind
Social value was delivered through a range of community-focused initiatives. These included a volunteer day at St Luke’s Hospice, a garden transformation project at Winsford Youth and Community Centre, and a food donation drive supporting Mid Cheshire Foodbank. We also engaged with local students through mock interviews and by delivering a construction site safety assembly to 150 pupils at Winsford High Street Primary School.
A key challenge of the project was maintaining uninterrupted station operations during the refurbishment. The Smartspace team worked closely with Cheshire Fire Authority to phase works effectively and provide temporary systems to ensure that 24/7 emergency response capability was never compromised.
The successful delivery of the Winsford Fire Station refurbishment highlights Smartspace’s ability to deliver complex, live-environment upgrades with a focus on sustainability, social value, and operational excellence. The station now stands as a modern, efficient facility equipped to serve its community for years to come.”
