A people-led hub supporting health, wellbeing and community connection
The Abbey Centre in Camden is a pioneering, people-led health and community hub that brings together primary care and social infrastructure under one roof. Combining the Abbey Community Centre and Belsize Priority Health Centre, the development creates a seamless, co-located environment designed to support both physical and social wellbeing.
By integrating clinical services with community-led support, the centre makes it easier for residents to access the care they need in a single, welcoming and inclusive setting, supporting stronger connections, improved health outcomes and a greater sense of community belonging.

A community-centred vision
At the heart of the Abbey Centre is a commitment to community-first design. Developed as part of Camden Council’s Community Investment Programme (CIP), the project was shaped through extensive consultation and engagement with local residents.
This consultation-led approach ensured the building reflects the needs, voices and aspirations of the community it serves. The result is not just a facility, but a place the community can feel proud of, designed to enhance everyday life and support Camden’s wider ambitions for inclusive growth and wellbeing.

Integrated design for better outcomes
The Abbey Centre demonstrates the power of co-location in delivering integrated care. By bringing together community services and primary healthcare, the building supports a more holistic approach to wellbeing.
- Ground floor – Community Centre
A vibrant, accessible space offering a range of social, educational and support services. This level includes a welcoming community hub, a crèche, and direct access to an outdoor garden room, encouraging interaction, learning and wellbeing. - Upper floors – Health Centre
Modern, purpose-built consultation and treatment rooms provide high-quality clinical care in a contemporary environment, enhancing both patient experience and staff working conditions.
The two functions work independently while also complementing each other, creating a cohesive, multi-purpose environment. The building has also been future-proofed, enabling it to function flexibly as a single unified entity as needs evolve.

Architecture that reflects its community
The Abbey Centre’s design balances modernity with warmth and character. The building features a range of vertical timber elements, forming a distinctive “barcode” pattern across the façade.
This brings texture, rhythm and a human scale to the building, reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of the local community while creating a recognisable local landmark.
Inside, the design prioritises openness, accessibility and comfort, ensuring every visitor, from patients to families and community groups, feels welcomed and supported.

Lasting impact
The Abbey Centre is transforming how care and community services are experienced in Camden. By removing barriers between clinical care and social support, it provides a more connected, responsive and person-centred model of service delivery.
The result is a place that not only supports healthier lives but also strengthens community ties, demonstrating how thoughtful design and collaboration can create meaningful, lasting impact.
