Young people across Brent have been given a unique table tennis masterclass by Paralympic gold medalist, Will Bayley MBE thanks to support from national developer and housing maintenance provider, Wates who is working across the borough.

Will attended the ‘Fit & Fed’ community summer camp to give young people an exclusive masterclass in table tennis and inspire them with a few tips and techniques, before holding a rally competition for the children to practise their new skills.

The exclusive session formed part of a month-long Fit & Fed activity programme, which took place at Roundwood Youth Centre in Brent. Initiated by StreetGames and run by Sport at the Heart, Fit & Fed is a free community programme open to young people aged 5 to 18 years. It includes a range of sporting and artistic activities as well as day trips and forms part of a campaign to combat holiday hunger, inactivity and isolation.

The construction, development and social housing maintenance company’s presence in Brent currently includes Wates Residential’s development of Knowles House on behalf of the London Borough of Brent, which will provide 149 new homes, a mix of temporary accommodation and homes for independent living to support some of the borough’s most vulnerable people.

Wates Living Space is also working across Brent to deliver a ten-year programme of social housing improvement works on behalf of the council, including the repair and refurbishment of roofing, windows and doors as well as interior decoration.

Wates recently announced a renewed sponsorship deal with Will as he prepares for the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020. The sponsorship will see Wates and the recently announced Strictly Come Dancing 2019 contestant team up on a number of social value activities to inspire young people.

Will commented:

“I am a huge believer that every single young person should be given a chance to find and nurture their talent, no matter what that talent is. Wates has been a huge supporter of mine but I’m also very proud to be able to join them and get involved in initiatives such as Fit and Fed to help make a difference.”

David Morgan, Managing Director of Wates Property Services, added:

“Wates has worked in Brent for a number of years. Our work has presented us with a variety of ways we can help the community, whether we are volunteering our time to paint a community centre or offering training opportunities for local people.

We are extremely grateful to Will for giving up his time to join Wates in supporting charities like Sport at the Heart and their programmes like Fit & Fed. It is an incredible community initiative and we’re delighted to have been involved.”
