HomeNewsWates Construction appointed to deliver South Derbyshire leisure and office development
Plans for a major new leisure and office development in Swadlincote have taken a significant step forward, with our Construction East business appointed to deliver the landmark project via the Procure Partnerships Framework.
South Derbyshire District Council confirmed the appointment following a competitive procurement process.
The proposed development, located off William Nadin Way, will deliver a modern new leisure centre and office space, replacing the existing Green Bank Leisure Centre and supporting the wider regeneration of Swadlincote town centre.
The new facility will include a six-court sports hall, swimming facilities, gym, fitness studios, café and flexible community spaces, alongside new office accommodation for the Council.
We will work alongside the Council’s appointed architects, CPMG Architects, and the wider consultant team, who have been developing designs, undertaking consultation and progressing final plans since last summer.
Enabling works are already underway, and we are set to start on site this summer. The new facility is anticipated to open in Spring 2028.
This was a thorough and competitive procurement process, with Wates Construction coming out distinctly as the successful bidder. They presented a high-quality bid, showing a huge amount of experience, having worked on similar projects.
“Wates’ commitment to ensuring their projects deliver not just quality, but a scheme that represents good value for money and social value for local communities, helped them to stand out.
“I look forward to watching this project progress and seeing our plans come to life.”
Councillor Robert Pearson
Leader of South Derbyshire District Council
We’re excited to partner with South Derbyshire Council to realise their vision for a landmark leisure and office facility.
“Our ambition stretches beyond the physical construction of a building, we also aim to create a lasting legacy, delivering spaces that support communities and drive long-term social and economic value.”
Mark Jones
Operations Director at Wates Construction East
We’ve supported South Derbyshire District Council from the very earliest stages of this project, procuring the professional team from RIBA Stage 0 before seamlessly appointing Wates Construction through a two-stage procurement route.
“This approach gave the Council the flexibility to assemble an experienced team that shared its vision, demonstrated strong value for money and could deliver the scheme at pace. We’re pleased to have supported the project from concept through to contractor appointment and look forward to seeing this landmark development take shape for the benefit of the local community.”
