100 for 100 series: Lucy Makepeace | Wates

How long have you been in your current role?

My role changed this week! Before that I was a Bid Writer for Wates Living Space for three and a half years.

What brought you to Wates?

I used to work for Midlands based SME Purchase Group and I transferred over when we were acquired in 2014. What made me stay at Wates though was the people and the ability to progress.

What advice would you give to women entering the industry?

Go for the traditional construction roles if that’s where your passion is. If it’s not, look at the amount of positions available which are different to those people typically associate with this industry. I joined this industry by chance straight after I graduated. I did leave for a while to try something else but then I made the conscious decision to come back because I realised how many opportunities there are and how much variety there was in construction compared to other sectors.

Who are your role models?

My first ever Line Manager. He taught me so much about the world of work in my first year in the industry and pushed me to develop and aim high. Apart from that I’d have to say my Mum!

Tell us something unusual about you

I used to live and work in Cambodia. During my time there I learnt a lot about the reality of modern day slavery so I’m really passionate that Wates are doing so much to help tackle this in our own communities.

What changes would you like to see in 100 years time?

Inclusivity. For stereotyping to be eliminated on all levels.
