Introduce yourself for us

I’m Charlotte Hollingsworth, Assistant Surveyor for Wates Construction North West.

How long have you been in your current role?

I’ve been in my current role 12 months and with Wates for nearly 3 years.

What brought you to Wates?

It would have to be a mixture of people and reputation. Coming to Wates was a career change for me as I originally studied Law at University and pursued a career in the legal industry for nearly 7 years. Although I’d studied for a long time to get to that point, I didn’t feel like law was right for me. I was working for a large insurance broker at the time in their legal department looking at construction contracts and appointments and I found it really interesting, so one day I decided to find a career which combined my experience and studies with construction and become a QS. Having grown up knowing Wates and their reputation, it seemed like the logical first choice to apply!

What advice would you give to women entering the industry?

Someone used to tell me that you never know how hard something is until you try it for yourself and I think that applies here – don’t be scared by the stereotype. There really is something for everyone and it is a great industry to work in!

Who are your role models?

My Granddad – he taught me to never give up, never to compromise and the value of hard work.

Tell us something unusual about you

I can speak three languages and some (very) basic sign language.

What changes would you like to see in 100 years time?

I’d like to see an Industry with the best people from all different backgrounds who contribute the best ideas and ways of working to make construction more innovative, safer and environmentally friendly.
