Our Construction South business has officially begun work on a new teaching facility at Isle of Wight College, marked by a groundbreaking ceremony attended by project partners, education leaders and local dignitaries.

The event brought together representatives from the Department for Education (DfE), AtkinsRéalis and civic leaders, including both the Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight, highlighting the strong partnership behind a project focused on supporting future skills and opportunity on the Island.

Speeches were delivered by George Mosey, UK Operations Director for Wates Construction; Susie Sheldon, Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight; Sangeeta Redgrave, Deputy Director at the Department for Education; and Ros Parker, Principal and CEO of Isle of Wight College.

Each spoke about the importance of investing in education and creating opportunities for young people.

Creating spaces for learning

The project is designed to support the College’s growing curriculum and provide flexible learning spaces for students.

The new facility will include:

  • A purpose-built two-storey teaching block
  • Specialist learning spaces
  • Flexible classrooms that can adapt to future needs
  • Modern facilities designed to support skills development

These new spaces will help students gain the knowledge and practical experience they need for future careers, while strengthening opportunities across the Isle of Wight.

“Working with Wates has been a dream. They deliver on their promises, keep us regularly updated on progress, and communication has been excellent throughout.

“The team are wonderful to work with – having them on site feels like having an extension of our own college family. They’ve fitted in with everyone here, and it’s been a great experience.”

Ros Parker

Principal and CEO of Isle of Wight College

“Education plays a vital role in shaping the future of communities. By creating high-quality learning environments, we can help ensure young people have the space and support they need to develop their skills and pursue their ambitions.

“This new facility will strengthen opportunities for students on the Isle of Wight and support the long-term development of skills across the Island.”
