Wates Group has emerged as a double winner from the prestigious 2016 Building Awards, held in central London this week (8 November).

The company was named Major Contractor of the Year (over £300m) and CEO Andrew Davies was the recipient of the Awards inaugural CEOs CEO of the Year award.

As a major contractor Wates has been involved in numerous flagship projects, including the Victoria and Albert Museum; a series of developments on the Greenwich Peninsula; and the RIBA-award winning 61 Oxford Street.

Andrew Davies was acknowledged by his peers for his exceptional leadership and contribution to the construction industry.  Since joining Wates in January 2014, Andrew has led an ambitious strategy that has resulted in significant growth for the business, both organically and through the acquisition of the Purchase Group and parts of the Shepherd Group.  The judges also recognised the commitment and contribution the business has made to social value which saw Wates awarded with the Queens Award for Enterprise earlier this year, for the second time.

James Wates CBE, Chairman, Wates Group, commented:

Andrew has helped us deliver year-on-year growth; instituted a high-performance culture throughout the Group and set in place a business strategy which is on target to turn Wates into a £2bn business by 2020. At the same time, we have continued to uphold the values which have been established over the generations. His success is richly deserved

Andrew Davies, Chief Executive, Wates Group, said:

While Im clearly delighted to have picked up this prestigious award for CEO of the Year, the real prize is that of Major Contractor of the Year for Wates Group.  This is absolute testament to the quality of our people and projects and how we support the communities in which we work.  In a year which has seen us awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise for the second consecutive time, I believe everyone in the company can be extremely proud of all of our achievements.”
