Wates Living Space successfully builds futures in Waltham Forest

Leading housing and maintenance provider Wates Living Space has seen outstanding results from its latest Building Futures training programme, with the course in Waltham Forest resulting in a 100 percent pass rate and 25% of participants receiving job offers.

Alongside delivery partner Ixion Holdings, Wates brought its two-week accredited training programme to the London borough where, with the help of Waltham Forest Council, 11 candidates were chosen to take part.

During the course the candidates worked towards achieving a BTEC Level 1 in construction, traffic marshalling, asbestos awareness and health and safety qualifications, as well as sitting the Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) exam on the final morning.

The training programme also provides hands on experience in joinery and multi-trade skills and offers interview techniques and coaching for successful employment on completion of the course.

The candidates were given the opportunity to visit a Wates Construction project in Newham where the contractor is building the £10m London Design and Engineering University Technology College, enabling them to experience a live building environment.

Additionally, mock interviews were set up with Wates’ supply chain partners MadiganGill, O’Neill and Brennan and TMN, to allow the candidates to practice their employability skills. One individual was so impressive that he was offered a job during his mock interview with MadiganGill and is now enjoying working on one of its sites as a handyman.

In total, all 11 candidates achieved their CSCS cards and three received employment offers within a day of finishing the programme.

The Building Futures programme is designed to teach adults who are not in education, employment or training key skills to help them return to work. It is always amazing to see the results and progression of the candidates and to see a quarter of them complete the course having secured job offers is just incredible.

Everyone starts the programme with varying levels of experience and it is a true testament to the trainers and the students that this group achieved a 100 percent pass rate in the CSCS exam. It is clear that the Waltham Forest candidates all have bright futures ahead of them and on behalf of Wates, I wish them the best of luck as they begin their careers in the construction industry.”

David Morgan, Managing Director, Wates Living Space

I really enjoyed having the opportunity to do the Building Futures programme, especially the carpentry modules and the supply chain interviews. I have quite a lot of experience so was able to guide others. I really got on with everyone on the course. The interviews were especially worthwhile for me as I was offered a job afterwards and am now feeling really positive about the future.”

Renton Nelson, Waltham Forest Building Futures Graduate

The Building Futures programme has been fantastic for our residents in taking a big step towards their employment goals. It has provided them with all the necessary tools to succeed. A big thank you to Wates and Ixion team.”

Rajesh Karia, Jobs Brokerage Team Leader, Steps into Work Team, London Borough of Waltham Forest

The Building Futures programme was launched in 2005 and to date over 1,250 people have completed the course across the UK. After completing the programme the candidates will be supported by Ixion Holdings for six months, with further employability support to anyone who requires it.
