Wates Living Space appointed by Sheffield City Council in £5m deal

Wates Living Space has been appointed by Sheffield City Council to deliver adaptations works to between 400 to 500 of public and private sector properties across the city per annum.

Wates Living Space has been appointed by Sheffield City Council to deliver adaptations works to between 400 to 500 of public and private sector properties across the city per annum.

As part of a three-year contract worth £5m, Wates will undertake a programme that will make the homes of elderly and disabled individuals safer and more accessible, allowing them to live a more secure and independent life.

The leading social housing maintenance provider has appointed a specialist team of 19 operatives to deliver the works, which will enable residents to live in their own homes for longer.

Through the installation of railings and wheelchair ramps, in addition to converting existing bathrooms to wet rooms, the programme will create an accessible environment for residents by removing any barriers that they face to using their properties independently. Adaptations such as these can often reduce the need for hospital visits, or allow patients to be discharged home at an earlier date.

This appointment follows Wates Living Space’s successful delivery of the council’s window and door refurbishment programme, which has seen the team install 5,000 doors and 2,000 windows at approximately 3,500 homes across the city to date.

As part of this its commitment to the local community throughout the delivery of this contract, Wates will engage with local schools, provide work experience opportunities and create new jobs across the region. This includes a commitment to delivering eight workshops or escorted site visits with schools, in addition to six workshops within local schools and colleges, six work experience placements for over 18s and four apprenticeships – two of which have already started on site.

The team is also keen to grow its supply chain in the region so that the South Yorkshire economy benefits directly from the works being delivered.

John Flower, Business Director at Wates Living Space, commented:

We are delighted to be growing our already strong relationship with Sheffield City Council – our being awarded this contract is testament to the excellent work we have previously undertaken on its behalf. Adaptations such as these have to be of the highest standard, allowing people with sometimes complex needs to live independently in their own homes, confident in the knowledge they are as safe and secure as possible.

We look forward to delivering further high-quality maintenance works across Sheffield, making a real difference to the lives of people throughout the city.
