Wates Launches Campaign to Support Cardiff Social Enterprises

Leading social housing maintenance provider, Wates Living Space, is calling for increased engagement with Cardiff social enterprises (SE) as part of a city-wide drive to help grow the SE sector.

The commitment comes as Wates joined forces with social enterprise experts, iSE, to host a ‘Seeing is Believing’ event to demonstrate the difference SEs make to the lives of local people.

Hosted at SE venue the Beacon Centre, the best practice event introduced delegates to a range of social enterprises working across Cardiff, including Greenstream Flooring CIC, Vision 21 and GR Cleaning Services.

Local social enterprises in attendance also included the Merthyr Tydfil Institute for the Blind, Ministry of Furniture, EBO Signs and Social Firms Wales.

The event gave delegates the chance to hear about the social value created by SEs, including the training and employment opportunities they create for vulnerable members of society.

The commitment to Cardiff SEs forms part of Wates Living Space’s work in the city, which includes a £2.9m roofing contract across 193 properties in Caerau and Romney on behalf of Cardiff City Council.

As part of this work, Wates has also pledged to engage social enterprises within its supply chain as well as creating opportunities for on-site training and employment.

Wates recently launched a study into the impact of its relationship with social enterprises across the UK, which found that for every £1 spent with SEs, £1.77 of social value was created. The work that social enterprises do ensures that money invested brings a long-term benefit to local economies and, more importantly, to local people.

We’re extremely keen to support this across Cardiff and our latest Seeing is Believing event will hopefully encourage our industry colleagues to join us in engaging social enterprises within their supply chains.”

David Morgan, Managing Director of Wates Living Space

We are delighted to be working with Wates Living Space to deliver ‘Seeing is Believing’ tours to raise awareness of social enterprises and the great work they do in the Cardiff area, and beyond. iSE is passionate about telling the story of not only the ‘good stuff’ achieved by social enterprises but the goods and services traded by social enterprise that mean they are valuable partners in the Wates supply chain.

The social enterprise sector contributes over £24 billion to the UK economy each year, employs c.1,000,000 people and is recognised as being innovative and responsive, therefore able to meet market needs and be sustainable, while delivering social impact and supporting the wider social mobility agenda that changes people’s lives for the better.”
