Leading national engineering specialist, SES Engineering Services, has marked the completion of its £1.7m contract to deliver mechanical and electrical (M&E) services on South Yorkshire Police’s new state-of-the-art Barnsley Custody Suite.
The 20 cell suite, located on Churchfield and forming part of Barnsley Police Headquarters, replaces the existing suite on the site. The scheme is a key aspect of the force’s major £19m project to improve custody facilities across South Yorkshire.
Working in close collaboration with lead contractor Willmott Dixon and South Yorkshire Police, SES was responsible for the design, supply and installation of a range of M&E services, including ventilation, air conditioning, heating and lighting.
The completion comes just months after SES’ successful delivery of a £2.7m M&E contract on South Yorkshire Police’s flagship custody facility in Sheffield. Both schemes, completed alongside Willmott Dixon, were completed on time and on budget.
Replicating its success on the Sheffield project, SES and the project team maximised the use of pioneering Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology at Barnsley. The digital building technology enabled the teams to significantly reduce material costs, time and waste as well as improving efficiency and sustainability.
“With precision and public money efficiency required on this technically complex and high-security project, we’re proud to have delivered an engineering services solution to keep its 20 cells in use, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“The suite is already recognised as a flagship UK public sector building which is testament to the expertise and outstanding collaborative approach of the entire project team.
“The opportunity to transfer an existing and excellent working relationship directly from one project to another was a hugely significant advantage for everyone involved.”
Steve Joyce, SES Regional Director, Yorkshire
“It has been great to be able to move quickly from one project to the next and carry over a great team and all the lessons learnt from the Sheffield Custody Suite project.
“Whilst the Barnsley Project was of a smaller scale, it was infinitely more complex as it involved maintaining services to the remainder of the site which continued to be live throughout the build. Willmott Dixon, SES and the other supply chain partners managed to deliver impressive results ahead of programme, with minimal disruption and with outstanding quality.”
Paula Ibberson, Programme Manager, South Yorkshire Police
SES was recently awarded both Willmott Dixon’s ‘Supplier of the Year’ and Scape’s ‘Supply Chain Partner of the Year’ awards reflecting their outstanding work on both the Sheffield and Barnsley Custody Suite projects.
