Wates Construction has been appointed by Derby City Council to carry out a £7.8m expansion of Murray Park Community School in Mickleover, Derby.

The project involves the creation of a brand new building comprising a reception area, 15 classrooms and office space. It will be situated in front of the existing school which will also be subject to a refurbishment programme that will see the creation of new kitchen areas and reconfiguration of classroom space.

Designed by Lungfish Architects, the expansion project is set to completely modernise school facilities while increasing pupil capacity from 1,100 to 1,650 school places across year groups seven to 11.

Construction will commence in June with enabling works already underway to re-route utility services. Completion is expected by summer 2019 ready for staff and students at the start of the new academic year in September.

We’re pleased to be awarded the important task of expanding this highly regarded school – an appointment that reflects our credibility and experience in the delivery of exceptional learning environments.

It is a privilege to play a role in the enhancement of Derby’s education infrastructure and the resounding impact it has on the social and intellectual development of the city’s young people.”

John Carlin, Business Unit Director, Wates Construction Midlands

We are very happy to have appointed Wates to carry out this expansion project which will provide much needed improvements to Murray Park and I look forward to seeing the work progressing”

Greg Jennings, Director of Regeneration, Property and Housing, Derby City Council

We build strong partnerships with our clients and contractors and this scheme is the culmination of several projects we’ve undertaken with Derby City Council and Wates Construction.

Extensive client engagement along with our in-house technical expertise has allowed us to not only meet the basic requirements of the brief but to go one step further and help resolve legacy issues faced by the school.

Having reviewed the site as a whole we located and orientated the new building to provide a secure line to ensure better safeguarding as well as giving the school a new entrance to be proud of.

My involvement will continue throughout the construction phase and I look forward to seeing the students and staff enjoying their brand new teaching space.”

Lizzy Bennett, Project Architect, Lungfish Architects

Wates believes that business should be a force for good and will underpin this ethos in Derby by creating employment and training opportunities, investing in social enterprises, engaging a local supply chain and supporting the local community.

The project was procured through the empa framework, which is managed by Scape Group, a public sector organisation dedicated to creating ongoing efficiency and social value via the built environment. The empa framework has since been replaced by Scape’s Regional Construction framework.
