Construction of the new Braywick Leisure Centre is continuing apace with steelwork for the £32.8m facility now underway and the development’s structure beginning to take shape.

Wates Construction commenced building work in October last year and work to erect the steel frame is expected to be completed by July. Once complete, the building’s structure will feature 500 tons of steel and 20,000 tons of poured concrete. The next construction milestone for the site team will be to add the finishing touches to the building’s roof.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead’s new leisure facility in Braywick Park will replace the 40-year old Magnet Leisure Centre. When complete, the new building will feature a 10-lane swimming pool, larger training and splash pools, a 200-station gym, four squash courts, a larger sports hall and improved accessibility for disabled users. It will also use 70% less energy than the existing leisure facility.

Alec Jackman, Business Unit Director at Wates Construction, said:

“This is a significant milestone in the build programme of Braywick Leisure Centre. With the steel frame now under construction, local residents will really start to see their bold and ambitious new leisure facility taking shape.

The project is set to provide the surrounding community with a host of new services and lifestyle opportunities when it opens and I’m pleased to report that we’re on track for completion in early autumn.”

Cllr Samantha Rayner, lead member for culture and communities at the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, said:

“Seeing the construction of the steel frame of the new Braywick Leisure Centre is a very exciting part of the Braywick Leisure Centre build. It truly shows the scale of the centre and I hope it gives residents an idea of how the new centre will look and feel.”

Works at the Braywick Leisure Centre are being carried out by Wates on behalf of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead via Major Works – UK, part of Scape’s National Construction framework. The framework has been designed to deliver significant levels of local economic engagement as well as extensive community initiatives.
