2018 is a milestone year as it marks 100 years since women in the UK were given the right to vote as part of the Representation of the People’s Act.
At Wates we want to use this historic anniversary as a catalyst for promoting equality of opportunity for women across our industry. Throughout 2018 we are running a campaign called #100for100, where we will feature 100 women from across the business at all levels – providing a window into the daily working lives of our female colleagues and a platform for their views.

Introduce yourself for us
Hi, my name is Sally Kinchin and I am a Community Investment Advisor for Construction Southern Home Counties. As part of my role I have a particularly strong focus on Considerate Constructors Scheme and I am proud to say that SHC sites regularly achieve scores of 44 & 45, even a 46!!!
I am a mother of two children, Jasmine is 18 and at college studying A levels and Ben is 16 and has just started an apprenticeship in construction. I like to think that my time with Wates has helped influence Ben to explore opportunities in construction. Having two teenagers in the house keeps me busy at home as well as being busy at work but I really enjoy the pace of life, there is never a dull moment.
How long have you been in your current role?
I have worked for Wates for 2 1/2 years and I have been in my current role for 7 months. My first role at Wates was as Senior Secretary to the SHC Business Unit Director, this was a temporary maternity cover role. I really enjoyed the experience of working for Wates, so when I was offered the opportunity of a year at the Farnborough Exhibition Hall project as Site Secretary I jumped at it. At the end of the Farnborough project, where I was juggling being the CCS Champion for SHC with my role, I was delighted to be approached by the business to move into my current role. This was the best move I have made as I love my job and no day is the same. I get to visit all the SHC sites and work with the teams and also work with the local communities.
What brought you to Wates?
I had never worked in construction before Wates, I previously worked at Barclays for 24 years in IT Support and after taking redundancy, I had a year off. When looking to get back into work, I wanted to do something different and I was fortunate enough to come across the advertisement for a year’s maternity cover with Wates. I was interviewed by Jo Curtis, who’s job I would be covering and very quickly came to the conclusion that this could be a very good place to work, I was right.
What advice would you give to women entering the industry?
Go for it !! It’s a great industry to get into. Construction has such a variety of roles and endless opportunities available to people of all abilities and genders. If you work hard in this industry, you will get your rewards and the perception of wolf whistling builders and muddy building sites couldn’t be further from the truth, construction is one of the most professional and diverse industries you are ever likely to experience.
Who are your role models?
I don’t have any role models, although I do admire all women who juggle both a job and motherhood, which is a full-time job in itself.
Tell us something unusual about you
There is nothing unusual about me, though I do enjoy running. I have applied for run the London marathon next year, so if I am allocated a place I will need to get in some serious training sessions as the furthest I have run is a half marathon.
What changes would you like to see in 100 years time?
I would like to see a society free from plastic pollution, an education system that delivers excellence for everyone regardless of background. I would also like to see the construction industry get the recognition it deserves, there are some extremely professional and driven individuals in this business.
