Year out placements

Are you looking to gain some real world experience before you complete your degree and have a genuine passion for a career built environment? Our tailored one-year, paid programme is open to students currently studying a construction related degree, on track for a 2:1 and with a B in Maths and English GCSE.

Our structured programme is the first step to understanding more about our business and applying the knowledge you’ve gained in your degree so far. You’ll be given the opportunity to gain on-the-job experience as well as technical and behavioural development. There’s a chance we could help you through the final year of your degree with a possible job once you’ve completed your studies.

Production

The Wates operations teams are at the heart of any project and are involved in managing projects and developing good working relationships with the client, design team and supply chain by promoting best practice throughout the whole construction process. You will spend your time onsite at the centre of some of our biggest projects within Wates Construction, Wates Residential Developments, Wates Living Space, Wates Engineering or Wates Smartspace.

Our Production Management year-out placement programme is an important step in learning about the role of Site or Project Managers. You will be expected to engage in on the job training in key elements of construction, including for example design, engineering, planning, health and safety, building services and commercial.

The role

  • Promoting and upholding Wates reputation for providing the highest standards of site safety, health and welfare and protection of the environment
  • Working with our supply chain and surveyors to protect Wates commercial position and the potential for profit and repeat business
  • Developing good working relationships with the client, design team and supply chain by promoting best practice throughout the whole construction process
  • Developing an understanding in technical practices and sequences on projects.
  • Contributing knowledge and skills to the delivery of the project on time, on budget and to the required quality
  • Ensuring our subcontractors are delivering at the highest standards

What we’re looking for

  • On track to achieve 2:1 degree and a minimum B in Maths and English GCSE or equivalent

Commercial

The Commercial team within Wates is largely responsible for the contractual and financial management of a project. A combination of law, business and finance skills will be used to manage relationships with key stakeholders including clients and their representatives, designers, subcontractors and suppliers.

Our Commercial teams play a vital role in the construction of our projects. As well as working closely with our site teams to ensure a quality project is financially viable, they build relationships with our supply chain and safeguard our commercial position.

Our year-out Commercial programme is an exciting opportunity to understand more about how Quantity Surveying is applied on live construction sites. You will engage in on the job training in key elements of construction, including estimating, cost planning, health and safety, contracts, surveying and production.

The role

  • Safeguarding our contractual position relating to progress of the project, design responsibility and our legal obligations to subcontractors regarding payments
  • Undertaking tender analysis and negotiating the best rates and prices with suppliers whilst ensuring we receive the highest quality and standard
  • Providing sound contractual, commercial and financial updates to key stakeholders, including the preparation of reports
  • Preparing contracts for the procurement of technical and site specific packages
  • Developing good relationships with our clients, designers, subcontractors and suppliers through dealing fairly and professionally in all financial and contractual matters

What we’re looking for

  • Working towards achieving a 2:1 degree and a minimum  B in Maths and English GCSE or equivalent

Building Services Engineering

Building Service Engineering

Building Services manage the complex systems that bring a building to life. Managing the living and working environment on a project can range from controlling the temperature, lighting, data, fire systems and much more, to designing and planning the installation of these services.

Our Building Services Engineering year-out placement programme is an important step in learning about the role of Building Services Managers. You will be expected to engage in on the job training in key elements of construction, including mechanical and electrical engineering, design, planning, health and safety, operations and commercial.

The role

  • Developing your understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering systems and its impact on the project and end user
  • Understanding how life systems are mapped and installed
  • Problem solving key design or installation challenges on live projects in conjunction with design team and subcontractors
  • Promoting and upholding Wates’ reputation for providing the highest standards of site safety, health and welfare and protection of the environment
  • Developing good working relationships with the client, site team and supply chain by promoting best practice throughout the whole construction process
  • Developing your knowledge and work practices within the guidelines of safety and legislative regulations
  • Work with our supply chain and surveyors to protect Wates’ commercial position and the potential for profit and repeat business.

What we’re looking for

  • Working towards achieving a 2:1 in your Building Services, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering degree and minimum B in Maths and English GCSE or equivalent
  • A genuine passion for construction

Three step selection process

 

1) Application form

The first stage is completing the application form. This is your opportunity to shine and demonstrate your passion and enthusiasm to start your career at Wates.

2) Video interview

If your application is successful, we will invite you to complete a video interview. We’ll send you all the information you need beforehand.

 

3) Assessment centre

If you perform well at your video interview, we’ll invite you to attend one of our assessment centres. This is your chance to learn more about Wates, as well as meet some senior Wates people. You will have the opportunity to engage in a range of activities.
