Career Paths

Production

The Wates operations teams are at the heart of any project and are involved in managing projects and developing good working relationships with the client, design team and supply chain by promoting best practice throughout the whole construction process. You will spend your time onsite at the centre of some of our biggest projects within Construction, Residential Developments, Living Space, Engineering or Smartspace

Our Production Management Graduate programme is an important step in learning about the role of Site or Project Managers. You will be expected to engage in on the job training in key elements of construction, including for example design, engineering, planning, health and safety, building services and commercial.

The role

  • Promoting and upholding Wates reputation for providing the highest standards of site safety, health and welfare and protection of the environment
  • Working with our supply chain and surveyors to protect Wates commercial position and the potential for profit and repeat business
  • Developing good working relationships with the client, design team and supply chain by promoting best practice throughout the whole construction process
  • Developing an understanding in technical practices and sequences on projects.
  • Contributing knowledge and skills to the delivery of the project on time, on budget and to the required quality
  • Ensuring our subcontractors are delivering at the highest standards

What we’re looking for

  • 2:1 degree and minimum B in Maths and English GCSE or equivalent

Commercial

The commercial, Quantity Surveying teams within Wates are largely responsible for the contractual and financial management of a project. A combination of law, business and finance skills are used to manage relationships with key stakeholders including clients, designers, subcontractors and suppliers.

Our commercial teams play a vital role in the construction of our projects. As well as working closely with our site teams to ensure our quality projects are financially viable, they build relationships with our supply chain and safeguard our commercial position.

The Commercial Management Graduate Programme will give you the opportunity to engage in on the job training in key elements of construction, including estimating, cost planning, health and safety, contracts, quantity surveying and production.

The role

  • Safeguarding our contractual position relating to progress of the project, design responsibility and our legal obligations to subcontractors regarding payments
  • Providing sound contractual, commercial and financial updates to key stakeholders, including the preparation of reports
  • Undertaking tender analysis and negotiating the best rates and prices with suppliers whilst ensuring we receive the highest quality and standard
  • Preparing contracts for the procurement of technical and site specific packages
  • Developing good relationships with our clients, designers, subcontractors and suppliers through dealing fairly and professionally in all financial and contractual matters

What we’re looking for

Building Services Engineering

Building Services manage the complex systems that bring a building to life. Managing the living and working environment on a project can range from controlling the temperature, lighting, data, fire systems and much more, to designing and planning the installation of these services.

Our Building Services Engineering Graduate programme is an important step towards becoming a Building Services professional. You will be expected to engage in on-the-job training in key elements of construction, including mechanical and electrical engineering, design, planning, health and safety, operations and commercial.

The role

  • Developing your understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering systems and  its impact on the project and end user
  • Understanding how life systems are mapped and installed
  • Problem solving key design or installation challenges on live projects in conjunction with design team and subcontractors
  • Promoting and upholding Wates’ reputation for providing the highest standards of site safety, health and welfare and protection of the environment
  • Developing good working relationships with the client, site team and supply chain by promoting best practice throughout the whole construction process
  • Developing your knowledge and work practices within the guidelines of safety and legislative regulations
  • Work with our supply chain and surveyors to protect Wates’ commercial position and the potential for profit and repeat business

What we’re looking for

  • 2:1 in you Building Services, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering degree and minimum B in Maths and English GCSE or equivalent

Planning

Construction planning is fundamental to the management and execution of all construction projects. It involves mapping logistics, plant materials and resources to ensure projects are delivered smoothly.

Joining our planning team is an exciting prospect and will enable you to be at the forefront of our projects. The Trainee Planner programme is carefully designed to develop your understanding of the key elements of construction including design, engineering, production, health and safety, building services, estimating and commercial.

The role

  • Selecting the most appropriate construction methods and sequences
  • Scheduling work activities, both temporary and permanent, and organising them into a logical structure and sequence
  • Estimating the required resources, machinery and durations for the individual tasks
  • Identifying how different tasks interact with each other when planning project delivery
  • Understanding contractual requirements and implementing these within the planning phase
  • Working with the planning team to map out the project delivery from start to finish
  • Understanding how design and procurement influence a project
  • Producing the best programme for project delivery and effectively communicating this with site teams and key stakeholders

IT - Projects

To achieve our vision, our IT teams need to deliver the right tools and technologies to support our business – and ensure that they are efficient, resilient and secure.

Our teams support our IT Infrastructure, IT Service Delivery and IT Applications along with delivering IT Change across a diverse portfolio of projects and “business as usual” initiatives. We engage with our business stakeholders and external suppliers in order to deliver the right solutions for Wates.

The role

As an IT Management Graduate, you will be given the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and experience across all areas of IT, on a rotational basis, to develop a full and rounded understanding of our IT function. You’ll have the opportunity to gain experience within:

  • Infrastructure & Service Delivery – to develop an understanding of all aspects of our IT Operations, from 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support services to IT Security and Site Set Ups
  • Applications – to ensure our IT applications deliver for the business and are fit for purpose and resilient
  • Major Projects – to gain an understanding of our full IT project delivery processes, including defining requirements, developing solutions and delivering on time, on budget and at a high standard
  • Portfolio Management & Enterprise Architecture – to understand project controls, reporting and quality standards, along with our architecture design processes, standards and principles
  • On completion of the programme, you will have the opportunity to progress your career towards IT Business Analyst within our Major Projects team. You will also work towards achieving Certification with the International Institute of Business Analysts (IIBA)

What we’re looking for

  • 2:1 degree and at least B in Maths and English GCSE, ideally in Business, Management, IT or other relevant degree
  • Genuine interest in IT and Business Management
  • Interest and ability to analyse information and work with complex technical information

Structural (Temporary Works) Engineering

Our Temporary Works team is instrumental in ensuring our sites are provided with the right guidance and support with their temporary structural needs to enable the permanent works to be built.

The role

As a Temporary Works Management Trainee, you will be given the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and experience in design engineering for our construction sites both above ground and subterranean. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop a well-rounded understanding of technical practice and sequencing of construction and temporary works
  • Develop your knowledge of the stages of project delivery from tender to completion and understand the scope of involvement for the engineering team
  • Work with our on-site project teams to gain an insight in to construction methods whilst developing a full understanding of the need for temporary works and requirements
  • Promoting and upholding Wates reputation for providing the highest standards of safety, health and protection of the environment
  • Develop good working relationships with internal and external customers, including consulting engineers, subcontractors and suppliers
  • Support in ensuring design checks of internal designs and those of a third party are carried out
  • As part of your development programme, you will also be supported in working towards your Membership of ICE

What we’re looking for

  • 2:1 degree in either Structural or Civil Engineering and at least B in Maths and English GCSE
  • Genuine interest in temporary works design and engineering
  • Interest and ability to analyse complex information and work with detailed technical information
  • Ability to communicate with a range of people
  • Logical approach to problem solving
  • Keen eye for detail

Three step selection process

 

1) Application form

The first stage is completing the application form. This is your opportunity to shine and demonstrate your passion and enthusiasm to start your career at Wates.

2) Video interview

If your application is successful, we will invite you to complete a video interview. We’ll send you all the information you need beforehand.

 

3) Assessment centre

If you perform well at your video interview, we’ll invite you to attend one of our assessment centres. This is your chance to learn more about Wates, as well as meet some senior Wates people. You will have the opportunity to engage in a range of activities.
