Quantity Surveying Management Trainee Programme

Do you enjoy working with numbers? Want to manage the finances of multi-million-pound projects? Then our Quantity Surveying Management Programme may be the pathway for you.

The commercial, Quantity Surveying teams within Wates are largely responsible for the contractual and financial management of a project. A combination of law, business and finance skills are used to manage relationships with key stakeholders including clients, designers, subcontractors and suppliers. Our commercial teams play a vital role in the construction of our projects.

As a Wates Quantity Surveying trainee, you will be involved in assisting with:

  • Procurement and payment of sub-contractors
  • Preparing tender and contract documents

Site Management Trainee Programme

Are you looking for a role with a mix of being out on site and in the office? Then our Site Management Programme might be the right pathway for you. Site Managers often find themselves at the heart of our Wates projects. As a Site Management Trainee you will be involved in the following:

Building Services Management Trainee Programme

If you’re interested in design and like putting your analytical and problem-solving skills to the test, then our Building Services Engineering Management Programme may be the pathway for you.

Building Services manage the complex systems that bring a building to life. Managing the living and working environment on a project can range from controlling the temperature, lighting, data, fire systems and much more, to designing and planning the installation of these services.

Our Building Services Engineering Graduate programme is an important step towards becoming a Building Services professional. You will be expected to engage in on-the-job training in key elements of construction, including mechanical and electrical engineering, design, planning, health and safety, operations and commercial.

Estimating Management Trainee Programme

Are you a forward thinker? Want to help us win multi-million-pound contracts? Then our Estimator Management Programme might be the right pathway for you.

Estimators hold a pivotal role within preconstruction and are responsible for estimating the costs of a building project. They work with all the other functions (design, building services, planning and site team) to understand their requirements and express them in an estimate which can then be offered as part of the work winning process. The cost of a project is usually the most important factor when a customer decides which company to work with.

As a Wates Estimator trainee, you will be involved in:

  • Researching materials, equipment and labour costs
  • Gathering quotes from sub-contractors and suppliers
  • Assessing the levels of risk on a project
  • Analysing company data, exchange rates and prices using software packages

Business Management Trainee Programme

Our Living Space business is one of the UK’s leading housing maintenance providers, delivering planned, responsive maintenance solutions across the UK for local authority and housing association partners. We understand that our work can make a significant and lasting impact in the communities we operate within. Our business supports the regeneration of communities and helps to improve living standards for tenants, breathing new life in to their properties and creating places that people are proud to call their home.

As a Wates Living Space Business Management Trainee, you will be given the opportunity to gain an understanding and develop your knowledge of the core Living Space business. You will support key functions on a rotational basis to ensure you develop a full and rounded overview of the Living Space business and you will gain knowledge in:

  • Work Winning – developing your understanding and skills in preparing tenders, engaging with potential clients and gaining an appreciation of our client needs
  • Site Management – working with the project delivery team and gaining experience on our site, with residents and our customers
  • Commercial – supporting commercial teams to ensure projects are commercially strong and ensuring accurate business reporting

The programme also incorporates two other rotations for example, Finance & Reporting, IT systems or Client Services

Finance Management Trainee Programme

As a Wates Financial Management Trainee, you will be involved in:

  • Assisting with quarterly forecasting and bank reconciliations
  • Calculation and entry of monthly accruals and prepayments
  • To assist in preparing the monthly reporting pack for distribution to senior management
  • To assist the finance team in completing detailed annual budgets and rolling forecasts
  • Work closely with the finance teams to settle intercompany balances on a monthly basis
  • To provide other analysis reports required by your Manager or wider Finance Team
  • Communicate with finance and commercial teams to resolve any queries

Sustainability Management Trainee Programme

Land & Planning Management Trainee Programme

The Wates Residential Developments Group (WRDG) is the Group’s investment arm focused on all aspects of the residential development market – from land, planning and development expertise to construction and delivery.

WRDG is now a business of significant scale with a current development pipeline of some 27,000 homes and around £150m of capital currently committed to a wide range of residential development investments. Looking forward into 2019 and beyond, the business has excellent foundations upon which to grow and deliver continued success, with a clear focus on further developing its expertise and capability while attracting new team members to support significant planned business growth.

The Role

You will be expected to engage in on the job training in key elements of Land & Planning, including for example Finance, Legal, Risk, Health and Safety and Project Management.

As a member of the developments team your overall responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the Projects and Land team in the appraisal, management, purchase and disposal of land in line with the Wates Developments Business Plan.
  • Building knowledge and understanding of the Wates business
  • Understanding budgets, forecast and business plan
  • Developing an understanding of people & leadership skills, interaction and networking by attending landowner, agent, professional  and  local  authority  meetings
  • Developing a basic understanding of Wates Group SHE policies and best practice relevant to Wates Developments
  • Working towards becoming a subject matter expert in the field of politics, localism, and issues surrounding land & planning

Some of the specific tasks you may undertake are:

  • Reviewing sites that sit within the property portfolio and identify those sites with development potential.
  • Build relationships and establish regular contact with planning and other built environment professionals
  • Contribute to quarterly updates of financial appraisals and the preparation of reports and forecasts to assist in the general administration of the business
  • Involvement in  due  diligence  in terms  of  planning, legal, technical  and sales  for  acquisition approvals
  • Provide support with different types of land deals with particular emphasis on option agreements, unconditional contracts and legal documents associated with House Building Joint Ventures (HBJV).

Design Engineering Management Trainee Programme

The Role

As a Design Engineering Management Trainee, you will be involved in:

  • Assisting in the production of the Contractors proposals
  • Ensuring the project team are working to the agreed Contractor Proposals.
  • Liaising with the Design Manager reporting on project design performance
  • Assist with reviewing the design process relating to Health and Safety issues prior to construction.
  • Coordinate project team comments, and resolve any design related construction queries with the design team.
  • Assist in identifying new systems and processes to drive quality, efficiency and save costs
  • Plan effectively to ensure projects are delivered on time, to standard and to budget
