Apprenticeships

Our apprenticeship programmes are an excellent opportunity for school and college leavers as well as experienced trade professionals to develop your skills, knowledge and experience towards professional management.

We offer a range of apprenticeships from Intermediate (level 2) and Advanced (level 3) to Higher (level 4) and Degree level (level 6) apprenticeships for school and college leavers. Our apprenticeships are industry recognised and designed to provide you with the experience and knowledge to support you towards becoming a professional in the built environment.

Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships

We offer great opportunities if you are interested in starting your career as trade professionals or within business support functions.

Our opportunities are countrywide. We recruit for Business Admin, Customer Service, Trades and Professional Apprentices. We typically recruit twice a year with a January or September start.

Higher & Degree Apprenticeships

If you have at least eight GCSEs (grades A-C incl. Maths and English); A-levels or HNCs in a construction related subject, you are eligible to apply for our Higher and Degree level Apprenticeships.

Our programmes include support with professional development, on-the-job experience, behavioural and technical development within a structured programme.

We are keen to hear from school or college leavers who have a real passion for the built environment and want to develop your skills and competence towards becoming a chartered construction professional. We offer pathways in a range of professions below:

Career Paths

Estimating

Estimators hold a pivotal role within preconstruction and are responsible for estimating the costs of a building project. They work with all the other functions (design, building services, planning and site team) to understand their requirements and express them in an estimate which can then be offered as part of the work winning process. The cost of a project is usually the most important factor when a customer decides which company to work with.

Our Estimating Management Trainee programme has been designed to give the best start in a rewarding career as a professional Estimator.

You will experience all the elements of building from design, construction, supply chain, materials, product specifications, cost planning, engineering and planning. Estimating is a rewarding profession and allows you to gain a very rounded experience of all elements and professions within the industry.

The role

  • Building financial knowledge by working with our existing estimating team on live bids and gaining knowledge and understanding of the estimating process
  • Developing good working relationships with all functions within the preconstruction  (design, planning, commercial, proposals and bid management)
  • Developing new IT skills with estimating software such as Onsite and Causeway and using this to produce take-offs and estimates
  • Refining organisational skills by working to strict tender timescales and following defined tender processes
  • Gain knowledge and understanding on risk management and how we manage this during the tender process

Commercial

The commercial, Quantity Surveying teams within Wates are largely responsible for the contractual and financial management of a project. A combination of law, business and finance skills are used to manage relationships with key stakeholders including clients and their representatives, designers, subcontractors and suppliers.

Our Commercial teams play a vital role in the construction of our projects. As well as working closely with our site teams to ensure our quality projects are financially viable, they build relationships with our supply chain and safeguard our commercial position.

The Commercial Management Programme will give you the opportunity to engage in on the job training in key elements of construction, including estimating, cost planning, health and safety, contracts, quantity surveying and production.

The role

  • Safeguarding our contractual position relating to progress of the project, design responsibility and our legal obligations to subcontractors regarding payments
  • Providing sound contractual, commercial and financial updates to key stakeholders, including the preparation of reports
  • Negotiating the best rates and prices with suppliers whilst ensuring we receive the highest quality and standard
  • Preparing contracts for the procurement of technical and site specific packages
  • Developing good relationships with our clients, designers, subcontractors and suppliers through dealing fairly and professionally in all financial and contractual matters

Building Services Engineering

Building Services manage the complex systems that bring a building to life. Managing the living and working environment on a project can range from controlling the temperature, lighting, data, fire systems and much more, to designing and planning the installation of these services.

Our Building Services Engineering Apprenticeship is an important step towards becoming a Building Services professional. You will be expected to engage in on-the-job training in key elements of construction, including mechanical and electrical engineering, design, planning, health and safety, operations and commercial.

The role

  • Developing your understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering systems and its impact on the project and end user
  • Understanding how life systems are mapped and installed
  • Problem solving key design or installation challenges on live projects in conjunction with design team and subcontractors
  • Promoting and upholding Wates’ reputation for providing the highest standards of site safety, health and welfare and protection of the environment
  • Developing good working relationships with the client, site team and supply chain by promoting best practice throughout the whole construction process
  • Developing your knowledge and work practices within the guidelines of safety and legislative regulations
  • Work with our supply chain and surveyors to protect Wates’ commercial position and the potential for profit and repeat business

This programme is a specialised programme so if you meet one of the criteria below, you would be eligible to apply:

  • HNC in Building Services Engineering
  • Level 3 Mechanical or Electrical Apprenticeship
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a mechanical or electrical trade and at least five GCSEs (grades A-C)

Planning

Construction planning is fundamental to the management and execution of all construction projects. It involves mapping logistics, plant materials and resources to ensure projects are delivered smoothly.

Joining our planning team is an exciting prospect and will enable you to be in the driving seat of our projects. The Trainee Planner programme is carefully designed to develop your understanding of the key elements of construction including design, engineering, production, health and safety, building services, estimating and commercial.

The role

  • Selecting the most appropriate construction methods and sequences
  • Scheduling work activities, both temporary and permanent, and organising them into a logical structure and sequence
  • Estimating the required resources, machinery and durations for the individual tasks
  • Identifying how different tasks interact with each other when planning project delivery
  • Understanding contractual requirements and implementing these within the planning phase
  • Working with the planning team to map out the project delivery from start to finish
  • Understanding how design and procurement influence a project
  • Producing the best programme for project delivery and effectively communicating this with site teams and key stakeholders

Production

Our Operations teams are at the heart of our projects. They are involved in managing projects and developing good working relationships with the client, design team and supply chain by promoting best practice throughout the whole construction process.

Our Production programme is an important step towards becoming a Site Manager. You will be expected to engage in on-the-job training in key elements of construction, including for example design, engineering, planning, health and safety, building services and commercial.

The role

  • Promoting and upholding Wates reputation for providing the highest standards of site safety, health and welfare and protection of the environment
  • Developing your knowledge of construction practices and sequences ensuring logical approach to project delivery
  • Working with the operations team to ensure every aspect of project delivery is to the highest standard and quality
  • Reading and interpreting site drawings as well as marking up progress with the site team, ensuring the project is being delivered as per project plan
  • Developing good working relationships with the client, design team and supply chain by promoting best practice throughout the whole construction process
  • Ensuring our subcontractors are delivering at the highest standards
  • Working with our supply chain and surveyors to protect Wates commercial position and the potential for profit and repeat business

Three step selection process

 

1) Application form

2) Video interview

If your application is successful, we will invite you to complete a video interview. We’ll send you all the information you need beforehand.

 

3) Assessment centre

If you perform well at your video interview, we’ll invite you to attend one of our assessment centres. This is your chance to learn more about Wates, as well as meet some senior Wates people. You will have the opportunity to engage in a range of activities.
