Cambridge pupils have been given an insight into the range of careers available in the building industry with one student becoming the third generation to step foot into the sector with Wates Construction.
Students from North Cambridge Academy high school, St Meads Inter-Church School and Thurston Community College spent time with the Wates team in Cambridge – with 15 year old Kayley Philpott, from Longsands Academy in St Neots, following in the footsteps of her mother and grandfather.
Soon to be retired Wates employee Malcolm Mitton and his daughter Jane Philpott who currently works for Wates, have collectively spent more than 55 years years in the construction industry, and 29 with Wates specifically – which is itself a family business. Malcom is a Project Director for Wates Construction in the Northern Home Counties and was involved in some of the company’s largest projects for Her Majesty’s Prison Service including HMP Stocken and HMP Wayland.
Kayley and her fellow students spent time understanding a range of different roles and responsibilities in the Wates team, receiving an introduction to building design, learning how to estimate a project and overseeing the production side to building projects. Members of Wates’ Cambridge team took time out to explain their job and outline the important role it plays within the industry.
“I really enjoyed my work experience. It showed me the different career opportunities in construction, and I particularly enjoyed our site visit and learning about all the planning involved in a project.”
Ian Vickers, Managing Director of Wates Construction Home Counties, commented:
“We know how important it is to invest in the workforce of tomorrow and show them how exciting and diverse this industry truly is. Work experience can be a real stepping stone for young people and can open their eyes to the variety of jobs and opportunities they didn’t know existed. It was a real pleasure to have these students spend time with us, they clearly have bright prospects whichever careers they choose to pursue.”
The Wates Group is one of the largest family owned construction, property services and development companies in the United Kingdom. First established by Edward Wates in 1897, the company is now in its fourth generation of family ownership.
