Whitworth Community High School - Wates

Whitworth Community High School

Project overview

Whitworth Community High School is a 750-place secondary school in the village of Whitworth, Rochdale, Lancashire. The school is being redeveloped in response to the age and condition of its existing estate allowing it to build on the significant role is plays in the community and is being funded by the Department for Education (DfE) as part of its 10-year School Rebuilding Programme (SRP).

The new school building will comprise a blend of a two and three-storey main teaching block, new all-weather pitch, hard and soft landscaping along with car parking. Sustainability is also embedded in design with the project forming part of a pilot scheme to deliver Net Zero Carbon in Operation. The school will remain fully operational during the build process, without the need for any temporary teaching accommodation, this will require close collaboration with highways to ensure access to the site whilst being considerate of busy periods.

Work will be undertaken in three phases:

  • Phase 1 – new build and external
  • Phase 2 asbestos removal and demolitions and external works
  • Phase 3 finishing up on site

Procured via the Department for Education’s (DfE’s) Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) Framework, it is one of a batch of six schools that Wates Construction was awarded in January 2020.
