Wates Construction has completed a refurbishment of an old MOD facility with additional new build sixth form centre and sports hall.

To ultimately condense all the schools in the area into one new “all through” academy for pupils aged 3-19 yrs. in an innovative “stage not age” learning environment.

Project Statistics

  • Extensive refurbishment project with asbestos removal and major works to damaged and weathered Portland stone to the exterior of the building . Challenging finishes internally with the inclusion of many curved walls and sliding, folding partition walls
  • Two large covered atrium areas, originally open courtyards created a unique design feature but also provided extra learning areas and dry covered access walkways between different parts of the building.
  • An innovative acoustic design facilitated the requirement for open plan teaching spaces.
  • Unusually the upper floors of the main school were residential apartments with a shared main entrance . Additionally, the landlord also owned the freehold of an attached hotel. Careful and sympathetic liaison with all parties required during construction.
