Equality of opportunity for everyone is essential for businesses to thrive. For 2019 International Woman’s Day, Rhonda Wainman shares what #balanceforbetter means to her.
Introduce yourself for us
Rhonda Wainman, Site Surveyor, Wates Smartspace.
How long have you been in your current role?
I joined the business in August 2014, so just over 4 years.
What brought you to Wates?
Initially a colleague made the move to Wates and then encouraged me to follow. I soon realised that even though Wates are a large company, the fact they are still owned and run by the Wates family means there is a real sense of community and informality that you don’t get in other large organisations.
What advice would you give to women entering the industry?
Don’t be afraid to use your voice and have your say. Gender should never be a barrier to advancing your career in the industry. As long as you work hard and remain professional you will reap the rewards.
Who are your role models?
There isn’t anyone in particular that springs to mind, but generally I am inspired by any woman who achieves her goals despite being told she can’t or she shouldn’t.
Tell us something unusual about you
I once did a skydive in Las Vegas dressed as Elvis – thankfully it was some time ago so no digital photos exist and can come back to haunt me.
What changes would you like to see in 100 years’ time
Many things need to change in this topsy-turvy world we live in and a lot sooner than in 100 years! We must drastically reduce if not eliminate our dependence on single used plastics that are killing our oceans. Also I hope that soon mental health is taken as seriously as physical health. We’ve taken some steps in the right direction but much more needs to be done.
