Wates makes progress with industry leading Target Zero campaign

Wates has published a progress report on its industry leading Target Zero campaign, which pledges to cut non- hazardous waste to landfill to zero by 2010.

Target Zero was launched in 2006 and has highlighted the role everyone has to play in better waste minimisation and management with the Government, contractors, sub contractors, suppliers and customers.

In 2008 Wates diverted 84% of all its non-hazardous material from landfill. Wates has worked in collaboration with a number of industry bodies, like WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) to pioneer best practice and the UK Contractors Group to develop a waste and measurement reporting processes.  Engagement with suppliers has also been a key feature of progress with supply chain companies supporting the Target Zero campaign and establishing common systems of reporting waste.

Liz Goodwin, Chief Executive of WRAP said: “Wates’ zero waste to landfill by 2010 target demonstrates that construction companies can deliver well beyond the Government’s target of halving waste to landfill by 2012.

“I am delighted that Wates has also signed up to WRAP’s Halving Waste to Landfill agreement.  As one of the first companies committing to this voluntary industry initiative, Wates leads the way for a growing number of businesses in setting stretch targets to improve their resource efficiency and reduce their waste to landfill.”

Rachel Woolliscroft, Wates' Head of Sustainability said: “Great strides have been made by Wates and the industry in reducing non-hazardous waste to landfill and we wanted to share our progress and methodology with others in order to further raise the bar across the industry.

“Through concerted efforts with our peers and organisations like WRAP, we have come a long way but there is still much more to do. I hope other companies find useful ideas in our Target Zero progress report.”
