Debenhams, Welwyn Garden CityWe won the project to convert an existing Co Op store located within the town of Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire. This new store is situated across from Debenhams' rivals, John Lewis, but is a much smaller store and therefore has concentrated on the clothes market.

The project included stripping out the store and providing new retail space on the ground, first and second floors. This meant we had to install new customer escalators whilst also refurbishing the existing goods and passenger lifts. We developed a new back of house area allowing a ‘café venue’ to be installed.

There was an element of ‘high risk works’ including the removal of asbestos throughout the building, as well as the use of lifts for the roof plant and installing the site cabins.

All waste from the project was removed by Hippo Waste and sent to be recycled at a waste transfer station. A new power and lighting scheme was created for the project
meaning alterations were not required until the ceiling grid and final lighting had been installed, saving both time and money for us and Debenhams.

The project was delivered in September 2007 on time and on budget.
