Our first green store was completed for M&S as part of their ‘Plan A’ in 2007, on time and on budget.
The list of innovative ideas implemented within the Galasheils store is endless. To improve the efficiency of lighting in store sun catchers and sun pipes have been installed in the roof to allow natural sunlight in and reduce the reliance on electrical energy, recycled rain water is used to flush the dual flush toilets and the ice block cooling system utilises the spare capacity at night generated by the refrigeration system. All materials used are made from recycled products where possible, ranging from floor
tiles to staff uniforms made from plastic bottles.
The change to natural refrigerants for all the stores refrigeration and cooling needs has not only saved energy but had a massive impact on the stores carbon footprint.
Our Senior Building Services Manager said ‘Alongside the development of a waste management plan from WRAP, we have targeted key materials which we believe can be recycled following the remodel of the store. Initial estimates indicate that up to 80% of all waste produced following the remodel will be recycled’.
From these initiatives it is predicted that the store will make the following savings in comparison to a similar size food store:
- 20% - 25% savings on annual energy consumption
- 20% - 25% direct carbon savings, which is the equivalent to 35 - 40 tonnes of CO2
- Significant savings to the carbon footprint of the store
- 25 - 30 cubic metres of water savings per annum
We are proud to be part of a development that takes great steps towards an environmentally
friendly store.
