In March 2007 we started work on this stunning looking building in the heart of Liverpool the City of Culture 2008.
The team lead by Damon Willicombe worked hard in getting to know John Lewis and how they operate.
The project works are known as ‘John Lewis Liverpool’ and comprise the retail shell fit out of a developers’ shell and core building to form a new John Lewis Department Store.
The store forms a key element of the Paradise Street Development Area, a major city centre redevelopment by Grosvenor Developments.
The store has two main areas, the customer selling/catering facilities and the Partners'
selling/support functions. The store is based on five floor levels – Basement, Ground, First, Second, Third and Fourth. Selling areas are provided on the Ground, First, Second and Third floor levels, with the remainder comprising Partners' facilities, storage and plant. The overall floor area equates to 260,000 sqft with 155,000 sqft dedicated to selling areas.
Throughout the project the team have been involved in a number of charity/fundraising projects including the Three Peaks Challenge in July 2007 and developing the Tiber Park Football Club in Toxteth. This saw Wates Retail, in conjunction with John Lewis, committed to managing the first phase of the project by stripping out and refurnishing the clubhouse.
The work provided a safe and comfortable clubhouse for community members, whilst acting as a symbol in the regeneration of the wider areas of Liverpool. Working in close partnership with Wates Retail, Wates Design have tirelessly delivered the project in often difficult circumstances. Much of the information inherited was
incomplete or missing, and it has been a hugely challenging, but ultimately very rewarding project to be involved with. The project was completed on time.
