Zenith Developments, Castle Vale
Wates completed on time and to budget a series of affordable flats at Castle Vale near Birmingham for the development arm of Mercian Housing Association.
The four blocks of flats feature 27 low cost apartments for rent with tenants being given the option to buy at a later stage.
We held a Community Day to get to know the local people which involved meeting teachers from local schools and ended up with Wates taking on three 16-year-old boys studying for their BTEC in construction at Castle Vale High School to work alongside us and our subcontractors on the project.
One, carpenter Keiran Edwards who was on site for two-and-a half days a week, said: “It’s great to get out of the classroom and into a real life work environment. I’m learning a lot.”
We have provided scrap timber and bricks along with obsolete drawing to help out with the school’s construction courses. We have also donated PPE equipment.
We will be taking on painters and decorators from Castle Vale High to take part in the final stages of the development.
