Waitrose, East Cowes, Isle of Wight
Waitrose East Cowes is the first 'Green' Waitrose powered solely by wood chippings and also the first Waitrose on the Isle of Wight.
The project itself involved constructing a 2,555m2 new shell, 1,684m2 of which is the sales floor; a 226 space adjacent car park, with a further 54 space car park located opposite the site; and a landscaped town square. Following the construction of the shell for Kimberley developments, Wates were awarded and carried out the fit-out for Waitrose.
The project was delivered on time and on budget and the site team received great feedback from the local residents association, local newspapers and the HSE regarding their work in a delicate location.
Key Aspects:
- Town centre location
- Adjacent to Ferry terminal
- Vehicle movement restrictions during IOW Festival, Cowes Week and Bestival Weekend
- Project is located on the Isle of Wight, restrictions all around, e.g. labour and materials
- Construction of a new ‘Town Square’ adjacent to the entrance of the store, including the burial of a time capsule assembled by local children
- A lot of interaction with the local community – transformed the landscape and local infrastructure
The project also unearthed some interesting discoveries including a coffin containing a body dating back to the mid 17th century, a suspected ordinance device and the footings of what is thought to be Henry VIII's lost castle.
The site recently had a visit from 11 bright faced pupils from St Catherine's School in Ventnor. St Catherine's is a national charity working with children and young people with speech, language and communication impairments. The pupils were given an insight into the basics of the construction industry by the project team. St Catherine's were sent a time capsule to fill with memorable items from 2010, which was buried in the new town square before the store opened.
