Waitrose, Altrincham
Wates Retail has built a new 18,400 sq ft Waitrose store, on land that was once owned by the National Trust.
Client: Waitrose
Project value: £7.1m
A clear demonstration of Wates acting as a progressive partner to Waitrose:
- The Deeds of the Covenant for the site specify that the National Trust can input into how the land in used, including building innovations required. Alongside Waitrose, the NT has driven the environmental and energy efficiency plans for the developments
- The first supermarket to have a refrigeration system operating from 100% non-CFC gases.
- Natural lighting achieved through sunpipes, with sensors to determine when artificial light is required
- A rainwater harvesting system and an under-car park drainage system which stores rainwater with a controlled release to form a new nature reserve away from the site
- The store is a flagship environmental development for Waitrose, elements of which are likely to be rolled out Nationwide
- Final account agreed at PC with outstanding customer satisfaction and team commitment
