Tyneside Cinema
Award winning major restoration
Tyneside Cinema holds a unique place in the history of film in the north of England.
A prominent and high quality piece of street architecture in the central conservation area of this North East conurbation, Wates Construction had the privilege of undertaking major redevelopment works to restore the dated cinema to its former glory.
Works included: a complex demolition, new build steel frame and translucent envelope alterations, refurbishments and restoration encompassing:
- Partially demolishing 3rd floor and building new 3rd, 4th and 5th floors to create additional accommodation
- Strip out, redesign and replacing of M and E services throughout the building
- Installation of digital projection capability for all three screens.
- Construction of a digital film production lab.
- Improving accessibility via remodelling of internal areas, including entrance foyer, bar, box office, toilets and seating areas.
The cinema took a trio of prizes at the 2009 Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors North East Renaissance Awards, coming out on top in the Building Conservation and Tourism and Leisure categories, as well as taking home the overall accolade of 'Project of the Year'.
Judges described the project as "an excellent example of a building conservation project".
