Sydney Jones Library, Liverpool
Transformed library opens eight weeks early
This framework project significantly enhances the University library by refurbishing both the existing structure and a nearby 1960s office block, and connecting the two with a new glass landmark Link Building. The result is a pleasant, well-lit modern environment that raises the library’s profile.
Working in partnership with the client and the project and design team, our co-ordination skills enabled the works to be completed eight weeks early, despite numerous alterations to the programme which required communication of more than 900 architect’s instructions throughout the supply chain.
Situated within a dense city centre campus, the project was carried out in two phases with sectional handovers. It required a team highly experienced with ‘live’ University construction.
Safely segregating the student population from the works was of paramount concern. For example, whenever trades were working in an area that offered access to literature, we even dedicated an operative to take books from the shelves on behalf of students. As a result of such measures, the library remained fully operational throughout the life of the project.
