Stockport College, Stockport
Learning by example: College makes the most of campus construction
Project: Creation of exciting 21st-century campus with state-of-the-art teaching, workshop and sports facilities, plus shops and restaurants for more than 10,000 students
This campus redevelopment is a logistically challenging project with a variety of site constraints due to its position in the town centre, plus multiple main construction phases and a number of handovers.
With work progressing in the heart of the live college environment, regular and open communication ensures that college activities are not affected, and that health and safety requirements are maintained.
After careful review of the design, our team created a ‘value engineering list’ from which the client chose options that realized savings of £1.4m. These have actually improved the building’s thermal and acoustic properties and cut four weeks from the contract programme, while having no effect to the appearance, function or concept design.
Working closely with the College, we have set up a ‘work-based learning programme’ to tap into the live construction project, including young apprentice training, ‘site experience’ days, career presentations by our own ‘construction ambassadors’, plus visits to our other high-profile sites across the region.
Duration: 120 weeks
Value: £20m
