St Edmunds Primary School - Little Hulton, Manchester
Strong community and client engagement ensured success for this Greenfield site project.
Allowing three degenerated schools to be moved into one, several challenges were encountered with one of the adjacent existing schools remaining live throughout the project and the area was surrounded by residential housing.
To overcome these challenges, engagement with the client and local community was key. This was achieved by:
Inviting the client and teaching staff for monthly site tours, integrating them with the works in a safe and informative manner.
- Distributing letters to all local residents informing them of progress and any work forthcoming work that could be of disturbance.
- Bringing in our education co-ordinator during the demolition phase to ensure a successful transfer of teaching equipment.
Benefits to the scheme included:
- Effective client engagement to secure delivery on time on budget.
- Worked as a close team to ensure Very Good BREEAM rating was achieved.
- Migration of students, service and ICT resources ensuring a smooth handover process.
- Use of traditional brick and block work, and an integrated curtain walling system with full height to all classrooms, which on the first floor led to a teaching balcony for the classes to use during the summer.
- Engaging the community with our annual community day which culminated in the creation of a wildlife garden, a time capsule for the local children to write letters to the future; a competition for the wining class to paint on the outside of the hoarding.
