Above all, it's about people

Royal Mail Liverpool

After a review of the mail centre network in the North West, Royal Mail was required to downsize mail centres to meet business demands from increasing competition and the continuing falling volumes of mail, as well as their outgoing commitment to an environmentally sustainable operation.

The project was competitively tendered by Wates beating six other main framework contractors who have regular dealings with Royal Mail.

The Royal Mail Liverpool South Distribution was Wates Retail’s first involvement with a new customer, an opportunity relished by the team.

The scheme consisted of converting an old grain store, a grade II listed building, into a postal sorting office which would serve South Liverpool. The building had already undergone minor internal alterations with Wates were reused many of the existing features.

The works involved placing a new structural concrete floor and epoxy screeds to a FM 2 specification, the installation of high bay gas heaters and high bay electrical lighting to provide 200 lux to the sorting office work space. Welfare facilities, breakout stations and purpose designed ‘drop in and meet’ spaces for the post office personnel were also installed. Offices were created using traditional construction methods; blockwork walls, timber joists, 2 cost plasterwork and associated M&E installation. Within these areas there were public interface rooms which include public collection points and private PO boxes, all built to the Post Office’s exacting standard. At the public entrance new footpaths were created with disabled ramps and parking spaces.

During the approach to PC, Post Office Union representatives visited the site and requested changes to the design resulting in a two week extension. Royal Mail was very impressed with our approach to these additional works.
