Above all, it's about people

Royal Mail, Crewe

After an in-depth review of the mail centre network in the North West, Royal Mail were required to downsize some mail centres to meet business demands from increasing competition, the continuing falling volumes of mail as well as their commitment to a more environmentally sustainable operation.

Part of the strategy involved the closure of the Mail Centre but retaining the Delivery Office element. Crewe was an existing Royal Mail building which was used as a distribution warehouse for QVC, a Royal Mail client, that was to be converted.

The building was a large span structural steel portal frame with brickwork infill panels. The structural input included the design of a first floor welfare area, draught lobbies, foundations for the external works and the design of a steel canopy to be installed on the front elevation.

Construction works were necessary to achieve the required space and this, ultimately, meant installation of a mezzanine area to house the canteen.

We also converted the original canteen into a first floor office and small kitchen area. There was installation of new building services including M&E systems, including a new lighting scheme throughout the main hall and offices and to the self mess area. Throughout the main sorting hall there was installation of new sorting equipment and works including flooring, partitions and joinery to the new mess area and offices. Painting, fire stopping, builders’ work, supporting timber joists to the new mess area and cosmetic finishes were carried out by Wates.

Externally, new fencing was erected to provide a secure yard area. Cycle shelters were provided for both operational and private cycle and motorcycle parking.

Royal Mail are a relatively new client to Wates, this project was the second project for the customer successfully delivered, on time and meeting all of the client expectations.
